1. Using web authoring and file transfer software
Many courses for web designers teach html
(hypertext markup language, the main technical language for writing websites).
However, because the Refugees Online course is intended to be short and highly focused on
the production of information-led websites, it is not realistic to expect the trainees to
learn html.
The course therefore assumes the use of a web authoring
software package, for example Microsoft FrontPage, Netscape Composer or Adobe GoLive,
enabling the trainees to see the approximate look of their pages as they create them
(sometimes refered to as WYSIWYG - what you see is what you get!).
We have not included any instructions on how to use any
particular software, as this is best obtained from the manufacturers themselves or from
tutors' own experience. For the Pilot Project we used Microsoft FrontPage Express
(to create the sites) and Ipswitch FTP95pro (to load them onto
the server).
Listed below are a few of the many web authoring and file transfer
products available, with links to the manufacturers' websites (NB: these sites are
not part of Refugees Online).
