2. Planning and organising a website
Many websites - no matter how attractive - fail for lack of
planning and organisation. Unplanned or disorganised sites are often:
- too complex, crowded or confusing
- poorly linked or signposted, making it hard for users to find
their way around the site
- full of incomplete or inaccurate information, with pages
marked as 'coming soon' or 'under construction'.
Planning the site
Before the trainees begin setting up their sites, discuss the
following questions with them:
- what is the purpose of your site?
- what image or message do you want to put across?
- what is it about - which key words summarise the content of
the site?
- who is your site aimed at?
Organising the site
- If necessary, help the trainees to organise their sites by
giving them a set of linked templates. Click
here for an example set.
- Encourage them to map out their site diagrammatically on
paper, with lines showing links between pages.
- When the sites are nearing completion, arrange a session where
the trainees demonstrate and explain their sites to the rest of the group.
This
helps them to spot any illogicalities and gaps.
