Supporting online communications and journalism among UK refugee communities

4. Using the web for research

There is little value in setting up a website if the people running the site are not familiar with the World Wide Web and what it can offer.  It is also important that those publishing on the Web have an understanding of the range in quality of information on other sites and so be inspired to make their site both accurate and authoritative.

The exercises and examples shown below can be used to develop the trainees' research skills.  NB: all the links lead to sites which are not part of Refugees Online.

Visit and discuss a range of relevant sites

Discuss the highs and lows of some of the following examples, especially regarding overall design, content, organisation of the site and ease of navigation.

Refugees and immigration:

News and current affairs:

Using search engines, directories and portals

Below are a few of the thousands of search engines, directories and portal sites which currently exist on the Web.  Get the trainees to use the same keywords on several search engines, then discuss the differences in results.

Look also at the Open Directory project, a comprehensive Web directory which relies on updates from volunteer editors.
