6. Using email - including email lists
Internet
Service Providers
If the trainees do not have an email
address of their own, guide them through the setting up of an account
with an Internet Service Provider (ISP). There are several factors
to consider when choosing an email service, including:
- Charges:
do you want your email service to be free (but often with adverts in
the messages) or with a subscription fee? do you want to have free
phone calls at certain times (with possible traffic congestion)? etc
- Method of accessing your
mail: do you want to use a web-based
system (you read your mail on the web wherever you are, eg. in a
library or internet cafe) or a 'POP3' system (you download your mail
onto your own computer)? Some ISPs offer web-based mail, others
offer POP3 - some offer both
- Internet access:
do you also need to set up internet access on your own computer?
(web-based email does not require internet access from your own
computer)
Below are a few of the many Internet
Service Providers offering email and internet access.
Email lists
Encourage the trainees to sign up for
relevant email lists, especially the Refugees
Online email forum. Visit the sites of companies which run
email groups and lists, including:
