6. Using email - including email lists

Internet Service Providers

If the trainees do not have an email address of their own, guide them through the setting up of an account with an Internet Service Provider (ISP).  There are several factors to consider when choosing an email service, including:

  • Charges:  do you want your email service to be free (but often with adverts in the messages) or with a subscription fee? do you want to have free phone calls at certain times (with possible traffic congestion)? etc
  • Method of accessing your mail:   do you want to use a web-based system (you read your mail on the web wherever you are, eg. in a library or internet cafe) or a 'POP3' system (you download your mail onto your own computer)? Some ISPs offer web-based mail, others offer POP3  - some offer both
  • Internet access:  do you also need to set up internet access on your own computer? (web-based email does not require internet access from your own computer)
