Background

The Angolan Community in London was formed in 1992 by a group of Angolan nationals living in London who were concerned for the welfare of Angolans in London. As you may be aware, Angolans endured a bitter civil war over the past three decades and many of its people have been displaced within the territory itself or have fled to disparate parts of the world. The historical connection with Portugal has meant, of course, that many Angolans have sought international protection in that country. Many others, however, have not felt it safe to seek international protection there precisely because of the closeness of the historical links and have chosen instead to come to the UK. Besides this body of Angolans, there is also a large community of students and other and other young people who have found themselves in the UK living in what in many ways is still an alien culture to them.

Against this background, the founding members of the Angolan Community in London saw the need for a cohesive support group who could offer advice and support to Angolans living and working in London, and to offer a point of contact for the various groups and organizations with whom Angolans are likely to interact. It has taken a lot of organization and dedication to from all sorts of people, from members of the Angolan community right through to concerned members of the indigenous community, local government and other charitable or support groups to make the Angolan Community in London the accessible and functional support group that we hope it can be describe as today. Without there help, we could not have progressed as far as achieving charitable status in 1995. (Our registered charity number is 1043979.)

The help and support of groups such as yourselves will be integral to the continuation of our work and very much hope that you will feel able to assist us in this goal.
