
Historical Background
Angola is a country situated in south west Africa. It is a former Portuguese colony and became independent on 11 November 1975. Portuguese is the official language and Luanda the capital city.
The presence of Angolans in the UK has been largely caused by the war taking place in Angola. Most Angolans living in the UK are asylum seekers and refugees. The Angolan Community is composed of students, migrants and refugees. When arriving in the UK their intention is to seek freedom under a democratic society.
In order to preserve Angolan identity and cultural values, the Angolan Community in London was founded with objective of gathering all Angolans regardless of their race, sex, political ideology and religious beliefs.
The Angolan Community is a charitable organisation composed of asylum seekers, refugees and non Angolans, migrants in London and elsewhere within the United Kingdom.
