INSTITUTIONAL DEVELOPMENT OF ASCOP PROGRAMME


THE HEALTH PROGRAMME

ASCOP has set up the health programme which contributes in improving health through promotion and providing advice to the African Swahili speaking community in the UK.

ASCOP holds HIV awareness raising events for 1500 Swahili speaking people. This programme provides support to 60 people infected by and/or living with HIV/AIDS

It organises 3 seminars/workshops for African Swahili speaking people and 200 professionals on health issues each term.

It provides advice and support to 300 people with Mental Health issues in the monthly ASCOP Newsletter:"GAZETI".

Finally it provides information in the monthly meetings once every quarter.


CHILDREN, YOUTH AND FAMILY SUPPORT PROGRAMME

The programme provides support to children and young people through educational and social activities. It runs Mother Tongue course of Swahili for 32 children. In addition it provides 3 outings for 150 children/youth per year. Hold 3 workshops for children/young people to discuss issues that affect them.

Moreover it supports women’s effective participation in community activities, especially in decision-making. It conducts research and document the needs and experiences of African Swahili speaking women living in the UK. And it holds 12 advice, support sessions for African Swahili speaking women in 1 year.
 

INFORMATION, ADVICE, SUPPORT AND REFERRAL PROGRAMME

The programme provides information, advice and support to ASCOP service users through timely research, dissemination of information and the production and distribution of high quality materials.

In addition it refers ASCOP users to the appropriate agencies.

It provides culturally appropriate services to the Swahili speaking asylum seekers and refugees in the UK.

It edits and produces every month a Newsletter called "GAZETI"  relating to provision of information, advice, support and referrals by ASCOP.


INTERPRETATION/TRANSLATION PROGRAMME

The programme provides Interpretation and Translations services for and to the Community.

It has recruited and trained 12 translators.

It promotes ASCOP services to 6 Agencies.

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME.

The programme raises the profile of African Swahili speaking community into the wider society and facilitating their access to services.

It establishes a community centre for drop-in services and provides 36 support group sessions for members.
Finally it provides 12 support group sessions for women.

INSTITUTIONAL DEVELOPMENT OF ASCOP PROGRAMME

The programme ensures the institutional and organisational development of ASCOP so that the organisation can be effective in delivering services for the benefit of African Swahili speaking women and men.

It develops and implements a fund-raising strategy that makes ASCOP partially self-financing.

This programme reviews and implements operational guidelines, including decision-making, management, financial and information management systems to guide the effective functioning of the organisation.

It strengthens ASCOP's networking links with other similar organisations in the UK and Europe.

And It expands ASCOP's influence in local and national organisations.
